Cooks Gardens
Cooks Garden is one of this country's leading outdoor sporting venues and is famous as the home of New Zealand's first sub 4 minute mile when Peter Snell claimed the record here in 1962.

Cooks Gardens has recently undergone a multi-million dollar redevelopment, featuring New Zealand's only wooden cycling velodrome, a 250 metre track that attracts world-class events to Wanganui.

The velodrome, a new synthetic athletic track and a grandstand which seats 1300 people, make Cooks Gardens a premier sports and entertainment centre. Within the gardens there is a cricket pitch and games field used for local representative sport as well as national and international fixtures.

Contact Cooks Gardens Trust to find out the up and coming events happening there next. It could be anything from a game of Cricket Max or a representative rugby game or even a concert that you have been wanting to go to.

Kowhai Park
Situated by the Wanganui River and close to town, Kowhai Park is one of the most popular attractions for families visiting Wanganui. The park features amongst other things; sea serpent swings, storybook characters such as Goldilocks and the three bears, a brontosaurus slide, pirate ship, flying fox and water maze. Added attractions to the park are the miniature Railway and roller beetles, which run on weekends and public holidays. The park also provides a 'pumpkin' barbecue area with gas-fired barbecues for families to enjoy.
A skateboard park with concrete rink and jump ramp is a real draw card to the park for those who are a little older and looking to practice their skills on BMX bikes or skateboards. The southern area of the park, which has an outstanding collection of mature evergreen and brilliant autumn foliage trees, is ideal for those who are looking for a leisurely stroll.

Entrance to the park is from Anzac Parade.
